Hello everyone!

I’m Barbara Urrutia-Badilla, a South American graphic designer and PhD candidate living in Leeds, UK. A citizen and mother of an almost one-year-old daughter. Passionate, intense, left-handed and short-sighted.

With a deep interest in Latin American design for social change during the 1960s and 1970s, I explore how design can serve as a powerful instrument for democratising invisible facets of citizenship in an age of daily information overload. From a Global South thinking, my research focuses on alternative ways of visualising data to support grassroots activism and challenge dominant narratives.

I strongly support grassroots causes, aiming to contribute from a decentralised perspective on global justice and social change.

Welcome to this space! I’ll be keeping you updated on the study, any news, and all sorts of bits and bobs about how my practice is progressing.
